The Municipality of Porto, in line with its Municipal Strategy started an ambitious process of renewal of its municipal fleet, involving a total of 390 vehicles, of which more of 70% will be fed by electricity, contrasting with the fossil fuels used currently by municipal fleet. This paradigmatic shift of the municipal mobility of Porto enhances the relevance of Porto for the electrification of the transport sector at national level. It is the intention of the Municipality to replace all of its combustion vehicles by electric propulsion ones. However, some combustion vehicles should be only in the modalities and typologies for which there is no viable alternative electric. The Municipality of Porto bases its commitment on the growing environmental concern and the promotion of the decarbonization of the travel modes, with the awareness that the transport sector constitutes one of the great contributors of the pollution in the cities, not only by the noise but the by the volume of emissions and other atmospheric pollutants. For this reason, the Municipality also feels responsible and considers its duty to contribute to the electrification of the mobility systems in the city. This behavioral shift was supported by a set of studies carried out by Ceiia (Center of Excellence for Automotive Innovation) that helped the Municipality to evaluate and decide on the viability of this paradigm shift. This change is expected to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in the order of 450,000 liters / year which will result in an estimated saving of 585,000 € / year. The use of a mostly electric fleet will also enable an estimated reduction in CO2 emissions in the order of 2,350 tons within the term of the four years contract, which shows the commitment of the Municipality to combat climate change, drastically reducing the contribution of the sector transport to global warming.
