Main opposition CHP’s Ankara candidate in the lead in mayoral race - poll

                    Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate for mayor of Ankara, Mansur Yavaş leads the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) candidate, Mehmet Özhaseki, 41.7 percent to 35.7 percent in Ankara, according to an opinion poll by PIAR.The poll, conducted between Jan. 31-Feb. 2, arrives as Turkey prepares to vote in local elections on March 31, 2019, expected to be a referendum on the 17-year leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Of those surveyed 13.7 percent of Ankara voters who cast their ballots in favour of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the June presidential and parliamentary elections, said they would be voting for CHP candidate Yavaş in March, Euronews reported.                    Yavaş is also the candidate of the center-right conservative Good (İYİ) Party, which is in an electoral alliance with the CHP. This is Yavaş’s second attempt at becoming mayor of Turkey’s capital after he came within one percentage point of winning in the 2014 Ankara mayoral race.
