City Information

The original name of Guangzhou was "Chu Ting" and was changed to "Panyu" in 214 BC. Until the year 226 AD, Emperor Qin Shihuang strengthened his rule, Sun Quan divided Jiaozhou into two parts: Jiaozhou and Guangzhou. The administration office was then based in Guangxin, therefore Guangzhou was named after "Guang" from Guangxin and "Zhou" after Jiaozhou. Then, the administration office of Guangzhou moved to Panyu and the name Guangzhou appeared. The City Hall of "Guangzhou" was established in 1921 AD and "Guangzhou" became the city's name up to the present.

Guangzhou is called "City of Flowers" for the flowers blossom throughout the year around the city. Furthermore, Guangzhou has other nicknames such as "Yangcheng" (City of Rams) and "Suicheng" (Rice Spike City). The city's symbol is the five rams sculpture at Yuexiu Park.

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province. It is located at longitude 112°57' to 114°3' East and latitude 22°26' to 23°56' North, in the Southeast of Guangdong Province and in the north of the Pearl River Delta. The city is a regional central city in the South China, bordering on the South China Sea, adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao and China's southern Gateway to the World.  

Guangzhou covers a total area of 7343.4 square kilometers, accounting for 4.21% of Guangdong province’s land area. The city has a population of approximately of 12,638,000 in 2019

 

Economy 

Guangzhou is currently the World's vital trading centre and extensive transportation system. China’s CN: GDP: per Capita: Guangdong: Guangzhou data was reported at 150,677.787 RMB in Dec 2017. This records an increase from the previous number of 143,638.000 RMB for Dec 2016. China’s CN: GDP: per Capita: Guangdong: Guangzhou data is updated yearly, averaging 78,718.500 RMB from Dec 2000 to 2017, with 18 observations. The data reached an all-time high of 150,677.787 RMB in 2017 and a record low of 25,626.394 RMB in 2000.

Moreover, the annual City Travel & Tourism Impact Report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has ranked Guangzhou as one of the top 10 fastest growing city destinations. The city has a growth in direct travel and tourism GDP: 10.3 percent in 2016 – 2017.

Climate

There are four seasons in Guangzhou. The warmest time is in July and August, with the highest temperature above 30 C and the coldest time of the year is from the late January to early February, with the lowest temperature of approximate -3 C.

- Spring : Guangzhou's Spring is from February to March. The temperature rises gradually, however there can be sudden drizzle.

- Summer : Summer starts from April to September. The hottest weather is in July and August. There are some of occasional typhoons and frequent afternoon thunderstorms in 

   this season. The Chimelong Water Park is recommended for an enjoyable and exciting water activities.

- Autumn : The season starts from October and ends in November. The weather is mostly sunny and cool. It has been said to be the best time to travel in Guangzhou. Some of the popular    tourist attractions are such as Yuexiu Park, White Cloud Mountain, the Pearl River, Beijing Road, Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, etc.                                                          

- Winter : The city's Winter is from December to January. The weather is a little chilling with   a little frost and snow. The city becomes a sea of flowers in this season. The average low and    high temperature is 9 °C and 18 °C.

Sister City Agreement:

On 13th November, 2009, MR. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, Governor of Bangkok and Mr. Zhang  Guangning, Mayor of Guangzhou City signed an Agreement on the Establishment of Sister  

City Relations between Bangkok, the Kingdom of Thailand and City of Guangzhou, the People's Republic of China.
