City Information

Ha Noi is located at latitudes 20°53' - 21°23' N and longitudes 105°44' - 106°02' E.It is bordered by Thai Nguyen and Vinh Phuc provinces in the north, Ha Nam and Hoa Binh in the south, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang and Hung Yen in the east, and Hoa Binh, Phu Tho in the west.    Ha Noi has a total area of 3,329 square kilometre and an approximate population of 4,480,000 in 2019 (UNdata).

It used to be the capital of North Vietnam during 1954 – 1976 and formerly was the capital of the present Vietnam from time to time since the 11th Christian Era to 1802. Ha Noi is located on the right bank of Red River. Major industries in the city are machinery, plywood, textile, chemicals, and handicrafts.

'Ha Noi' refers to the beginning part of river, is situated on Red River Basin. The initiated Li Dynasty established a capital in 1010 with the name 'Tang Long' which means 'a gliding dragon' in English. In 1702, King of Ngien Dynasty moved the capital city to Hue. After France conquered, Hanoi became an official capital again in 1887. After the independence in 1946, Vietnam was divided in 2 countries while Hanoi was the capital of North Vietnam and after the nation reunited in 1976, Hanoi has been the single capital city of Vietnam till the present time.
