City Information      

Astana, previously known as Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, Akmola, and Nur-Sultan. In 1997, the capital of Kazakhstan was moved to Astana, the second largest city of Kazakhstan. The idea of the creation of a new modern capital of Kazakhstan belongs to the President. The city has been renamed to “Nur-Sultan” to honor President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the leader who unexpectedly resigned on 19 March 2018 and 3 years later the city’s name was changed back to its original name “Astana”.

Astana is the northernmost capital city in Asia. At the present, the city has a total area of more than 722 square kilometers, its population size amounts to nearly 1.3 million people. The city consists of three districts – Almaty, Saryarka, and Yessil

Astana is located in the center of Kazakhstan in the dry steppe zone and in the grass steppe subzone, above the flood plain. The Yessil River is a major waterway of the capital.

The city’s location in the center of the Eurasian continent makes it an economically advantageous transportation, communication and logistics center, and a natural bridge between Europe and Asia.

The economy of Astana bases on trade, industrial production, transportation, communication, and construction. The main industrial products consist of construction materials, food, and mechanical engineering. The city is the largest business and entrepreneurship of Kazakhstan. The market share of small and medium enterprises (SME) of Astana is accounted for 34.7% of Kazakhstan. The average monthly salary of the residents accounts for 422,000 Kazakhstani Tenge or 33,066 Thai Bath.

The Baiterek Monument is the major symbol and brand of Astana. The top attractions consist of the Palace of Peace and Accord designed by a renowned British architect, Norman Foster, the Khan Shatyr Shopping and Entertainment Center built in the shape of a tent, and Duman, the farthest oceanarium from the sea in the world.


Furthermore, there are Atana Opera Theater, the largest Central Asian Mosque Hazret Sultan, the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Orthodox Cathedral of the Archdiocese of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Beit Rachel Synagogue, as well as the Kazakhstan Central Concert Hall, the Kazakh Yeli Monument, the Museum of Modern Art and the Presidential Cultural Center, The Astana-Arena, SaryArka National Cycling Center, The Alau Ice Palace, etc.
