City Information

Ulaanbaatar or Ulan Bator, formerly Urga or Niislel Khureheh is the capital and the largest city in Mongolia. It is situated on the Tuul River at the elevation of 4,430 meters, with the gps coordinates of 47° 55' 16.4280'' N and 106° 55' 6.8016'' E. The territory of Ulaanbaatar is 1,350 square kilometers. The city is surrounded by 4 mountains which are Bogdkhaan, Bayanzurkh, Songino Khairkhan and Chingeltei Khairkhan Mountains. The dividing point of the Arctic, Pacific and the Central Asian Endorheic drainage basin of Ulaanbaatar is the important drainage basin of the Mongolia and the world. Ulaanbaatar is in the zone of discontinuous permafrost. There are loads of mineral resources found in the city area, such as coal, gold, lead, iron, etc.

In 2019, the city population is estimated at 1.553 million (United Nations). As the result of migration which is mostly from the rural area, Ulaanbaatar has had steady growth in its population since the 1920s. There are 9 districts which include Bayangol, Bayanzurkh, Chingeltei, Sukhbaatar, Songinokhairkhan, Khan-Uul, Nalaikh, Bagakhangai and Baganuur. The districts in Ulaanbaatar are divided into 'Khoroos' which are the smallest administrative divisions. There is a total of 144 khoroos in Ulaanbaatar.

Ulaanbaatar is the industrial center of Mongolia. The major manufacturing plants include cement, iron, and brick works; footwear and garment factories; vehicle-repair works; food-processing plants.

The delegation of Ulaanbaatar visited Bangkok in order to pay a courtesy call on Pol. Gen. Aswin Kwanmuang, Governor of Bangkok.

Then, Pol.Gen. Aswin Kwanmuang, Governor of Bangkok and Mr. Batbold Sundui, Governor and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar signed Agreement on the Establishment of Sister City Relations Between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Kingdom of Thailand and the City of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

In the evening, Mrs. Wanvilai Promlakano, Deputy Governor of Bangkok welcomed the delegation of Ulaanbaatar at a welcome dinner hosted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
