Dalian is located at the southern of Liaodong peninsula, in Liaoning Province of China.The GPS-coordinates of Dalian are 38° 54' 50.411" N and 121° 36' 52.855" E. The city has
a total area of 12,574 square kilometers, with 2,415 square kilometers of the metropolitan area. The majority of landforms are mountainous and hilly and the others are lowlands.
The total population is estimated at 5,459,000 in 2019.
Dalian is the gateway of the north-eastern China and one of the earliest economically advanced cities in the region. Port of Dalian is ranked as the fifth largest port in China and the 13th globally by container throughput. The cargo ships carry locally built goods, including automobiles, electronics, industrial equipment and agricultural products.

There are five industrial parks and economic development zones, including Dalian Changxing Island Harbor Industrial Zone, Liaoning (Yingkou) Coastal Industry Base and Western Liaoning Jinzhou Bay Coastal Economic Zone (Jinzhou Xihai Industrial Zone and Huludao North Port Industrial Zone) located on the Bohai Sea, and Liaoning Dandong Industrial Park and Dalian Huayuankou Industrial Zone in Zhuanghe City located on the Yellow Sea coast. In the recent years, Dalian has launched its electronics and information sector to attract world's leading multinationals such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard to invest in manufacturing as well as research and development (R&D). In addition, Dalian earns its reputation as a service outsourcing centre for the global customers, especially Japan and the Republic of Korea.

Economic development of Dalian leads to the rapid expansion of the city. The urban development strategy, 'All Region Urbanization' has been implemented to balance the socio-economic development of urban, rural and industrial, including a cluster of city and town centers for the better livelihoods and the quality of lives of the people in Dalian.

Sister City Agreement:
On 19 July 2016, M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, Governor of Bangkok and Mr. Xiao Shengfeng, Mayor of Dalian City signed Memorandum of Understanding on
the Establishment of Friendly Relations between the City of Dalian, the People's Republic
of China and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Kingdom of Thailand.

One hundred piece sets of the Chinese calligraphy writing, including brushes, pieces of paper, and alphabet guides were delivered to Bangkok as gifts from Dalian Municipal People’s Government. It was a result of the visit of Ms. Wen Xueqiong, Vice Mayor of Dalian, to Bangkok during 3 - 6 August 2017 to explore the possible areas of cooperation according to the MoU on the establishment of friendly relations between the two cities. During the visit, Vice Mayor had observed the Chinese language class of Wat Benchamabophit School, visited Dusit District, and mentioned about further cooperation on education and youth exchange with Bangkok. International Affairs Office of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration sent all of the calligraphy writing piece sets to Education Department for the benefit of the Chinese language studies and learning in Bangkok.
