BMA and Beijing Sign MoU to Tackle Air Pollution
On 11 February 2025, at 9.00 hrs., Mrs. Jiraporn Pungprawat, Director of the City Relations Promotion Division, represented the International Affairs Office as a witness in the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in Air Quality Monitoring and Management between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Beijing Municipality. The event took place in Meeting Room 2 ,the Environment Department, Bangkok City Hall, Din Daeng.
The MoU, established between the BMA through its Environment Department and the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau, was coordinated by the International Affairs Office (IAO). This initiative falls under the framework of the sister city relations between Bangkok and Beijing and follows a series of engagements, including the Governor of Bangkok’s visit to Beijing in March 2024, the visit of Beijing’s air quality experts to Bangkok in August 2024, and BMA’s participation in the Beijing International Forum for Metropolitan Clean Air and Climate Actions in September 2024.
This partnership marks a significant opportunity for both cities to exchange knowledge, experiences, and best practices in air quality management. It aims to enhance both cities’ capabilities in air quality monitoring mechanisms, data exchange, capacity building, and pilot projects for pollution source identification. The collaboration also promotes technical exchanges among relevant environmental agencies and supports bilateral economic and trade cooperation to improve the quality of life for residents in both metropolises.
The signing ceremony was conducted online, with Mr. Prapas Lueangsirinapha, Director-General of the Environment Department, representing the BMA, and Mr. Chen Tian, Director General of the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau. The signing was also attended by Mr. Pornphrom N.S. Vikitsreth, Advisor to the Governor of Bangkok and Chief Sustainability Officer, Mr. Thosapol Suparee, Deputy Director-General of the Environment Department, along with representatives from the Environment Department, Foreign Affairs Office, and Beijing Municipality, who served as witnesses to this significant cooperation.
