Bangkok and Nishio City (Aichi, Japan) Discuss Strengthening Ties to Foster Comprehensive In every aspect of cooperation.

January 22, 2026 – The Governor of Bangkok welcomed a high-level delegation from Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, led by Mr. Ken Nakamura, Mayor of Nishio, for a consultative meeting aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and establishing a framework for future cooperation.

The Nishio delegation emphasized that this visit serves as a strategic mission to lay the groundwork for concrete collaboration ahead of the landmark 140th Anniversary of Thailand-Japan Diplomatic Relations in 2027 (B.E. 2570). This discussion is intended to pave the way for a series of joint initiatives and activities in the coming years.

Nishio City plays a pivotal role as a primary industrial hub in Japan. Located in Aichi Prefecture—which has ranked first in Japan for industrial shipment value for 46 consecutive years—Nishio itself ranks third within the prefecture for export value. The city is home to world-class automotive parts manufacturers, including Denso and Aisin, both of which maintain significant production bases and business operations in Thailand.

Beyond its industrial prowess, Nishio is renowned for its high-quality agricultural and fishery products, recognized both domestically and internationally:

  • Nishio Matcha: The city is Japan’s leading producer of "Tencha" (the essential leaf used for high-grade matcha), with a 2024 production volume of 347 tons. Nishio Matcha is distinguished by its traditional production methods, offering a uniquely mellow flavor and refined aroma. Local companies also play a vital role in promoting matcha culture globally.
  • Unagi (Eel): Nishio is the largest eel-farming hub in Japan, accounting for 20% of the national output. It features a world-first patented innovation in farming female eels, which are highly sought after for their superior texture and taste compared to males. Furthermore, the signature sweet-savory flavor profile of Nishio’s eel dishes aligns well with Thai consumer preferences, presenting a significant opportunity for culinary export and cultural exchange.

Proposed Framework for Cooperation

During the meeting, the Governor of Bangkok proposed several key areas for collaboration:

  1. Cultural and Youth Exchange: Promoting friendship between the younger generations through student exchange programs and organizing cultural festivals to introduce Nishio City to a wider Thai audience.
  2. Tourism and Local Product Promotion: Building on Nishio’s previous participation in travel fairs such as the Thai International Travel Fair (TITF) and events hosted by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). The BMA recommended Nishio participate in specialized large-scale exhibitions, such as the "Coffee and Matcha Festival," to directly engage Thai consumers and enhance the brand awareness of its premium matcha products.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is committed to continuing these discussions to transform these proposals into tangible projects, ensuring a robust foundation for a sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship.
