The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) host the Inaugural Ceremony for the Founding Cities of the Asian Circular Cities Declaration (ACCD) on 25 March at Bangkok City Hall, bringing together city leaders across Asia to advance the transition toward circular and sustainable urban development.
At the ceremony, Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, will sign the Declaration, making Bangkok one of its founding cities. The founding cities will be officially announced by ICLEI Japan, the organization responsible for establishing and operating the initiative.
The event will also highlight the longstanding partnership between Bangkok and Yokohama.
On this occasion, Takeharu Yamanaka, Mayor of Yokohama, will visit Bangkok to sign a renewed Memorandum of Understanding on technical cooperation for sustainable urban development with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The updated agreement introduces a new area of collaboration—joint leadership in advancing the Asian Circular Cities Declaration—further strengthening cooperation between the two cities.
Distinguished participants include Kazuhiko Takemoto, Chair of ICLEI Japan; Togo Uchida, Executive Director of ICLEI Japan; and Masato Otaka, Ambassador of Japan to Thailand, along with representatives from other founding cities are also participating online to witness a major step toward advancing circular economy initiatives across Asia of Bangkok.
Established in November 2025 during the 14th Asia Smart City Conference in Yokohama, the Asian Circular Cities Declaration promotes urban policies and actions that support circular economy principles, including resource efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable consumption and production across Asian cities.
Bangkok and Yokohama have cooperated on sustainable urban development since signing their first Memorandum of Understanding in 2013. Their partnership has supported initiatives such as the Bangkok Climate Change Master Plan and the Bangkok Energy Action Plan, contributing to shared efforts to advance decarbonization and sustainable urban transformation in Asia.
