Bangkok Governor Welcomes Azerbaijan Ambassador to Strengthen "Bangkok-Baku" Ties and Exchange Urban Development Expertise

 

BANGKOK — April 3, 2026: Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Elchin Ragub Oglu Bashirov, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Thailand, on the occasion of his official introduction. The meeting, held at Amornphiman Room, Bangkok City Hall, was attended by Mr. Adil Suleymanov, Counselor of the Embassy, along with Mr. Torsak Chotimongkol, Chairman of Advisors to Governor of Bangkok; Mr. Pimuk Simaroj, Secretary to the Governor; Ms. Rujira Arin, Deputy Director-General of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Department; and representatives from the International Affairs Office.

 

During the discussion, the Ambassador expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality and praised Bangkok as a vibrant city that feels like a "second home". He proposed establishing a city-to-city partnership between Baku and Bangkok, emphasizing mutual benefits in various areas such as traffic management, tourism promotion, and urban economic development. A key highlight of the conversation was the success of the Formula 1 (F1) Baku City Circuit. The Ambassador shared Azerbaijan's expertise in hosting the world-class event, which masterfully integrates a high-speed street circuit with the city’s 15th to 19th-century historical architecture and the Caspian Sea coastline. He reaffirmed Baku's readiness to share its long-term urban planning and systematic management strategies with Bangkok.

 

Furthermore, the Ambassador extended an official invitation to the Governor or his representatives to attend the 13th World Urban Forum in Baku. This global summit will host leaders from over 80 cities worldwide to discuss the future of urban living. In response, the Governor expressed his gratitude for the invitation and welcomed the opportunity to forge a meaningful bond between the two capitals, stating that Bangkok is eager to engage in knowledge exchange to enhance its urban governance.

 

To mark the occasion, both leaders exchanged tokens of friendship. The Ambassador presented a traditional "Buta" patterned tea set, a symbol of Azerbaijani heritage, and invited the Bangkok delegation to visit Azerbaijan’s World Heritage sites. In return, the Governor presented a Symbolic Key to the City and the book “As Floral Tributes for His Majesty the King,” signifying the strengthening diplomatic ties and future cooperation between the two cities.
