City Information

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) or Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh in Vietnamese, formerly (until 1976) Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam. The city is located in Lai Chau, with the gps coordinates of 10° 45' 45.4392'' N and 106° 39' 36.6192'' E. The city lies along the Saigon River to the north of the Mekong River delta which is approximately 580 kilometers from the South China Sea.
The city has a total area of 2,061 square kilometers and a total population of approximately 8,371,000 in 2019. Half of the residents (50%) in Ho Chi Minh practice Buddhism while 34% of the population has no religious affiliation, 12% is identified as Roman Catholic and 4% practices other religions such as Hinduism, Hao Hao, Islam, etc.

Ho Chi Minh City is the center of economy, finance, commerce, education, technology and science, health care and tourism of the country. Most of the industries and harbors in the southern Vietnam are located in Ho Chi Minh City or the surrounding provinces. The city serves its nation as an international trade hub. The city has been rapidly expanding over the last decades due to the fast growing economy, increasing population and the existence of numerous social and cultural institutions. The main industries include textiles and garments, footwear, plastics, food, electricity, automobiles, electronics, computer parts, rubber tires, mechanical products, embroideries, bamboo and rattan wares, lacquer wares and tourism.

On 3 April 2015, M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, Governor of Bangkok and Mr. Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City signed Agreement on Establishment of Friendly Relations Between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Kingdom of Thailand and the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
