The BMA Welcomed and Discussed with Representatives from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Thailand's Office

 

On July 9, 2021, Mr. Vallop Suwandee, Chairman of Advisers to Governor of Bangkok, welcomed the delegation from International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Thailand, led by Ms. Geraldine Ansart, Chief of the Mission for the IOM in Thailand. In this regard, the BMA’s officials from Health Department, Social Development Department, Public Works Department, and International Affairs Office jointly received and discussed with the delegation at Meeting Room 1, International Affairs Office, 28th Floor, Thani Noppharat Building, Bangkok City Hall 2 (Din Daeng).

Ms. Geraldine introduced the overall role of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) responsible for supporting migration, including migrant workers in different areas around the world. IOM has established the health care centers for refugees and migrants in Thailand, one of IOM members, and has continuously collaborated with Thai authorities on migration and human trafficking issues. This bilateral discussion included cooperative network building with the BMA’s agencies in helping workers and migrants who live and work in Bangkok, provision of vaccination services, disease testing, treatment and assistance on social security to workers, as well as seeking of cooperation with the BMA to support and continue working with IOM in the future. Also, the IOM delegation invited the BMA to join various campaigns created by IOM to strengthen positive attitudes towards migrant workers. The Chairman of Advisers to Governor of Bangkok stated that the BMA was delighted to collaborate with IOM, and the BMA’s International Affairs Office would be assigned to act as a focal point between IOM and the BMA. Regarding the issue of provision of interpretation service support in foreign languages such as Myanmar, Khmer, etc., Ms. Geraldine informed that IOM Thailand would be glad to assist in this matter. Moreover, the IOM delegation introduced the website https://mitrthai.com/ which is an online migrant worker information hub, providing migrant workers with access to up-to-date information and referral services in relation to safely migrating, working and living in Thailand through information in four languages – Khmer, Laotian, Myanmar and Thai.
