“The Landscape Improvement Project of Khlong Ong Ang Canal” by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) won the 2020 Asian Townscape Award (ATA).
“The Landscape Improvement Project of Khlong Ong Ang Canal” by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) won the 2020 Asian Townscape Award (ATA). The Asian Townscape Awards were hosted by UN-HABITAT’s Regional Office for Asia and Pacific (UN-HABITAT ROAP) in cooperation with Asian Habitat Society (AHS), Fukuoka Asian Urban Research Center (URC) and Asia Townscape Design Society (ATDeS) . The purposes of the ATA are to materialize a living environment that is happy and fulfilling to the people of Asia. The ATA aim to honor cities, regions, and projects that facilitate and materialize enhancement of living environment through an urban transformation in Asian cities. The key points in considering the eligibility for the Asian Townscape Award are: 1) Harmonious coexistence with regional environment 2) Safety, convenience and sustainability 3) Respect for regional culture and history 4) High artistic quality 5) Contributions to local development, capabilities of becoming models for other cities.
“Landscape Improvement Project of Khlong Ong Ang Canal” is the project to improve the physical environment of Ong Ang Canal, which is a valuable archaeological site and to preserve the local identities and restore the cultural heritage of communities along Ong Ang canal through the process of public participation ,to upgrade the people’s quality of life, and revitalize socio-economic context of Ong Ang Canal community that meets the needs of the local including sustainable management of Khlong Ong Ang Walking Street activities by the local. “Landscape improvement of Ong Ang Canal” won the 2020 Asian Townscape Awards as a model of landscape improvement project that is suitable for improving people's quality of life along with the development of the environment, safety, art and culture that are consistent with the urban landscape and lifestyle. The other countries that also received the 2020 Asian Townscape Awards were Japan, Malaysia, China, South Korea, and Nepal.
