Shanghai Municipality is located on the coast of the East China Sea with the gps coordinates of 31°2304 N, 121.4737° E. The mouth of the Yangtze River (Changjiang River Estuary) is at
the north and the Hangzhou Bay is at the south of the municipality. Shanghai is bordered by Jiangsu Province at the north and the west and the southwest is bordered by Zhejiang Province.
The municipality has a total area of 6,340.5 square kilometers. The 17 districts and a county under Shanghai Municipality include Pudong New Area, Huangpu, Jing'an, Luwan, Xuhui, Hongkou, Zhabei, Yangpu, Changning, Putuo, Baoshan, Minhang, Jiading, Jinshan, Songjiang, Qingpu, Fengxian and Chongming. In 2018, Shanghai has a population 25,582,000 (UN data).

Shanghai can be divided into three population zones which include the central city, the suburbs and the rural hinterland which is one of the world's greatest agricultural areas. The famous products of Shanghai are such as textile and embroidery, wool embroidery, silk, Chongming hairy crabs, yellow grass knitting, metal arts and crafts, flour sculpture, fermented bean curd (Jinjing Tofu).

According to the Shanghai Master Plan (2017-2035), Shanghai aims to develop itself to become an excellent global city, center of international economy, finance, trade, shipping and scientific innovation and cultural metropolis. To achieve this goal, the government has invested in economic sectors, marketing, internationalization, scientific and technological innovation and “ecological civilization” development.
In 2019, Shanghai port is one of the world’s largest and busiest seaports according to the World Shipping Council.
