Governor of Bangkok Participates in the Seminar on How to prevent LGBTQI+ discrimination and harassment in the workplace
Held on Wednesday 14th June 2023 at BACC Reiterating to Support Gender Equality and Respect of LGBTQI+ Rights
On 14th June 2023, the Governor of Bangkok delivered an opening remark for the seminar on how to prevent LGBTQI+ discrimination and harassment in the workplace hosted by the Embassy of Sweden and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The Governor emphasized the importance of Pride Month which is the month of gender equality. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration proudly supports gender diversity and equality through the Bangkok Pride event co-hosted by BMA. In addition, the governor truly hopes that Bangkok will have an opportunity to be a co-organizer of the Pride World. This event represents global gender equality which is one of the key factors to become more livable city for all. Moreover, the Ambassador of Sweden also emphasized that the Kingdom of Sweden has continuously promoted gender equality and guarantee respect for LGBTQI+ rights. The Ambassador hopes that gender equality will be the firmly established social norm in the near future.
In this regard, the governor also attended the seminar which was composed of four topics by four lecturers. The Equality Ombudsman was the first organization to clarify the meaning of LGBTQI+ Discrimination and harassment in the workplace, and how to prevent it through experiences from the government agency in the Kingdom of Sweden. The second organization is the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Rights (RFSL) which presented the guiding principles for organizations to prevent LGBTQI+ discrimination and harassment in the workplace. In this topic, the lecturer suggested that the organization need to set its own guiding principles, complaints procedure, and bring the harassment and discrimination issue to justice. IKEA in Thailand which is a Swedish company in Thailand highlighted how the organization can benefit from the inclusion and prevention of LGBTQI+ discrimination and harassment in the workplace through its experiences as an inclusive company. The last topic was about being LGBTQI+ in the workplace by Mr. James “Rusameekae” Fagerlund. In this topic, Rusameekae concluded that he considerably believed that all of us equally have potential and dignity of being human. He also thought that being true to oneself is the best thing one can do, so he hoped that equality for all genders will be the accepted social norm in the future. At the end of the seminar, the attendees had an opportunity to exchange their opinions and ask related questions. The governor also asked about public toilet issue for LGBTQI+ equality right. For this question, IKEA’s representative explained that the company allows the employees to use any kind of toilet as far as they feel comfortable. The moderator of the seminar added that there are so many neutral public toilets in Sweden as well.
